fly-fishing - the most wonderful kind of angling

The movie ,A river runs through it' has made millions of inhabitants of the USA start off
with fishing. Even non-anglers has been filled with enthusiasm by the elegance of this sports and the thrill when a huge trout, pike or salmon is caught.
In Europe the number of casters has doubled during the last 10 years and is still increasing. Fly-fishing is probably one of the oldest and most wonderflil kinds of angling. Watching for example a trout while taking a fly from the surface of the water is a special event - who wouldn't like to take the fishing4od at that moment.
Certainly not every water can be used for casting, but there should be a river or streem nearby where you can try this unique way of catching fish.

The way fly-fishing works is simple: one places an artificial fly on the sufface of the water
and hopes that a trout notices it.
But before we can cast our fly at a special place, we have to get to know the rod and the
equipment. The fly is extremely light, 50 the casting depends on a special choice of
equipment. The rods have lengths between 2m and 4.2m and are divided into different
weight-classes (AFIMA). The classes varie from 4 to 10. A rod from class 4-5 is less heavy than an 8-10-rod. For the normal catching of trout rods of the classes 4-7 can be considered, while 9-10 are used for salmon. The roll is fixed at the end of the rod, since it would only obstruct during the casting and reeling in. On the rod there are 50 called snakerings, reducing the friction of the fly-line.
The roll is build in a simple way and is only used for letting line go and for reeling in.
Like the rods the rolls are also divided into classes.
So a rod with the class 4-5 matches a roll with the class 4-5.
Actually the line is the most important thing in fly-fishing, because it is the actual weight. It
consists of PVC and either swims or sinks. The normal length amounts to 27m.
Between flyline and fly there is a second kind of line consisting of monofilline.
And now the bait - the fly: There are uncountable many different kinds. Some of them swim like the dry flies, others sink like the wet flies. Besides are there nymphs and streamer (see below).
These flies lookalike alive flies and seduce the fish to bite.
The flirther equipment consists of waders and a landing net.
So, now you have a short list of the basic equipment for fly-fishing and who knows, maybe an interest becomes passion.

Of course this kind of angling must be learned. Interested people are always welcome at the Casting Club of Savolax.
But also the normal angling has it's permit to exist. With those method in Sweden one can catch huge fish too.
The requirement - no maffer which kind of fishing you perform - is that you do it legal ly, by getting a valid fishing-permit.

In every case you get the right equipment at the Savolax Fiske Shop, as weil as help and advice and hints for the best places to angle.

Which fish can be caught by Fly-fishing?

salmon

It has a longish, spindle-shaped body with smal, fast scales. The salmon is a predator. He used to stay at less turbulant places to save his strength for the ascent to his spawn-area.

stream-trout

Older fish have a squat

body with an olivgreen

back. The sides are silver with black and red dots. They love hideouts and places with deep water, separated parts of the water without turbulences, shrubs that are hanging over the water and big stones. They are shy and flee
when the angler is not careft~l enougli.

pike

His body is longish, the sides look pressed together and there is a dorsal fln. The pike is a
predator, too. He has no staying power in swimming, 50 that he catches his bait in a sudden attack.

rainbowtrout

The body of the rainbow-trout is shaped similar like the one of the stream-trout. But it is not
that dependant on hiding-spots. It loves to stay in open water and to wait for insects and
womis floating by.

sea-trout

There are several striking differences to the salmon: 1. the body is stronger, 2. the tail is cut
straight and 3. the hd of the gills ends sharp. The sea-trout lives in the sea.

perch

The perch has pricks on it's fins. So be careflil, they can cause bad injuries. The perch lives
and raids in swarms. Bigger and old fish live as loners. When the water is less turbulent the
perch prefers to stay in the shallow water at the banks..
